Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver are exiting Grey’s Anatomy in the upcoming season 22 finale and there was a major cliffhanger for their characters Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman during the season’s penultimate episode.
This post will contain spoilers from episode 17, which aired on April 30, so beware of reading any further if you don’t want to be spoiled!
Heading into the episode “Through the Fire,” Owen and Teddy were seemingly going strong as a couple after a recent rough patch in their relationship. There’s a hiccup though. Just as Owen is about to tell Teddy how much he really loves her, she breaks the news that she’s considering taking a job in Paris.
Owen doesn’t have a great reaction. He tells her, “Do I have to be the bad guy who tells you not to go?… Just do what you want, like you always do.” Later, Owen calls Teddy to apologize and leaves a voicemail on her phone. As she is listening to the voicemail, she learns about a bridge that has collapsed.
Owen says in the message, “Teddy, I owe you an apology for last night. I had something I wanted to say, and your news kind of threw me. Let’s talk when I get in, if I ever get in. There’s a ton of traffic on this bridge…”
The message ends with honks and crashing sounds, leaving us to wonder if Owen is alive or dead amid the collapse of the bridge.
Shonda Rhimes may have already spoiled what happens…
The show’s creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes may have already hinted at the fate of Owen Hunt.
When news of Kevin and Kim‘s exits were announced, Shonda said in a statement, “Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen – two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other. It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves.”
Considering that there is a “happy ending,” we’re going to assume that Owen is alive and that he’ll end up with Teddy!
