Simepar confirms the occurrence of a category F1 tornado on the Fujita scale, the second lowest on the tornado scale, according to the Paraná Environmental Technology and Monitoring System.

The phenomenon was recorded late this Thursday afternoon (1), in Arroio Guaçu, in the municipality of Mercedes, in the west of Paraná, and has winds estimated at approximately 120 km/h.

The classification is made based on the analysis of cloud formation images, radar records and meteorological data received by the monitoring system.

According to Simepar, the tornado was short-lived, and in This Friday morning (2), the municipal Civil Defense did not register any incidents with the State Civil Defense Coordination.

Video records show a supercell with multiple vortices, with the presence of funnel clouds and two tornadoes. In the video, it is possible to see two tornadoes touching the surface at the same time, which indicates the existence of this tornado. In the surrounding area, it is possible to see several funnels.

These funnels are trying to connect at the surface to form new tornadoes, which is characteristic of this type of cloud.

Paraná is among the regions most prone to the formation of tornadoes on the planet, according to climatology experts. The state occupies the second largest tornado corridor in the world, behind only the so-called “central prairies” of the United States, which are characterized by flat relief and low-lying areas.
