President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will have cataract surgery on his left eye. According to Planalto, pre-operative exams were carried out on Thursday (29), in Brasília, confirming expectations that the surgery will be carried out on Friday (30).

Lula had the same procedure in 2020, but on his right eye. The president arrived early on Thursday from his trip to Panama, where he participated in the International Economic Forum – Latin America and the Caribbean 2026. He spent the day at Granja do Torto.

Cataracts are a natural aging process that results in the loss of transparency of the crystalline lens, which is the natural lens of the eyes, leaving it opaque and whitish. It can also occur for other reasons, such as diabetes, use of corticosteroid medications or eye trauma.

The individual who has this problem has the sensation of seeing through fogged glass, as if they were in a smoky or cloudy environment.

Through a surgical procedure, it is possible to replace this opaque natural lens with a transparent artificial one.
