Documents declassified since the 1970s show that, in 1946, at the end of the war, the US even offered to buy Greenland for 100 million dollars, paid in gold, after flirting with the idea of exchanging oil-rich lands in Alaska for strategic parts of Danish territory. The proposal did not gain traction, and Denmark resumed administration of the territory.
