His first appearance in the show also reveals how the series decided to handle the late actor’s ALS diagnosis, via People.
Cal, who is tipsy, visits son Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) and questions him about Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and her OnlyFans journey.
“The last five years had been humiliating for Cal,” Rue (Zendaya) narrates, as we see him sitting with empty bottles.
“He went from being the town’s top real-estate developer to a broke sexual deviant who narrowly avoided prison.”
Cal asks Nate about Cassie “selling pictures of herself online.”
“Where’d you hear that?” Nate asks, as Cal shares that someone from “sex and love addicts” revealed it to him. He also asks if Nate is having financial issues, and warns him about giving into “temptation.”
“You’re gay. You’re in denial, and it came out in very weird ways,” Nate says.
“I’m not gay. I was a hedonist,” Cal responds.
Sam Levinson shared how they would treat the character in a recent interview.
“We had a lot of conversations about just life and what that meant. I loved him very deeply, and I said, ‘Eric, whatever shape you show up in, we’re gonna make it work. I have faith that it’s all gonna work,’” he said.
“He showed up and I could tell he had a slight slur in his voice, and he told me that. I said, ‘Don’t worry. We’ll just put, like, five beer bottles in front of you and you’ve been drinking all night.’ He was like, ‘Perfect, perfect.’ And his character, it was such a gift.”
Cassie’s OnlyFans storyline was also prominently featured, resulting in backlash from viewers.
