US federal agents shot two people in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon, Portland police said.
“Two people are in the hospital following a shooting involving federal agents,” the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) said in a statementadding that their conditions were not known.
The PPB said its officers were not involved in the shooting.
“At 2.24pm, officers received information that a man who had been shot was calling and requesting help in the area of Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside,” police said. “Officers responded and found a male and female with apparent gunshot wounds. Officers applied a tourniquet and summoned emergency medical personnel. The patients were transported to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown.
“Officers have determined the two people were injured in the shooting involving federal agents.”
Portland’s mayor, Keith Wilson, confirmed the shooting in a statement. “Just one day after the horrific violence in Minnesota at the hands of federal agents, our community here in Portland is now grappling with another deeply troubling incident,” he said.
“We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts. Portland is not a ‘training ground’ for militarized agents, and the ‘full force’ threatened by the administration has deadly consequences. As Mayor, I call on ICE to end all operations in Portland until a full investigation can be completed,” Wilson added.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Portland office posted on X that it was “investigating an agent involved shooting that happened at approximately 2:15pm near the 10000 block of Main St. in Portland involving Customs and Border Patrol Agents in which 2 individuals were wounded. This remains and active and ongoing investigation led by the FBI.”
The FBI appeared to have deleted the post shortly after.
“We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis, but I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more,” police chief Bob Day said.
The police statement also reminded the community “that PPB does not engage in immigration enforcement”.
An ABC News affiliate reported that agents involved in the shooting were US Customs and Border Protection agents and that the FBI was leading the investigation.
