US President Donald Trump raised his tone on Greenland on Sunday night (11), citing threats from other powers such as China and Russia. In statements to the press aboard Air Force One, the American leader mentioned an agreement with Danish and Greenlandic authorities, but did not rule out the use of other methods.
“If we don’t take Greenland, Russia or China will, and I won’t let that happen. I would like to make a deal with them, it’s easier. But we will get the territory one way or another. (…) Greenland must make a deal [com os EUA]because they don’t want to see Russia or China dominate. (…) And do you know what Greenland’s defense is? Basically two sleds pulled by dogs”, joked the head of the White House.
The debate over the future of Greenland came to a boil again over the weekend. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Sunday that her country, Europe and allies are at a “crossroads” in the face of the “conflict” with the US over control of the Arctic island.
According to the authority, the world as it has been known until now will “end” if the American president decides to take by force the autonomous territory of Denmark, another NATO ally. The prime minister avoided answering whether Denmark has a plan if the US actually tries to take Greenland by force.
