The crime, which occurred in October 2025, shocked France and had international repercussions. The Louvre is the most visited museum in the world. The invasion took place around 9:30 am, about 30 minutes after the museum opened to visitors. The criminals parked a truck next to the museum and used a mechanical staircase to access the first floor. They broke an unprotected window, entered the building and broke into two high-security storefronts. The action lasted around seven minutes, and the criminals fled on a motorcycle. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the stolen jewels had “inestimable value” and represented a “true heritage”. “They clearly did some prior reconnaissance. They seem very experienced,” Nuñez said. A ninth jewel, the crown of Empress Eugênia, wife of Napoleon III, was removed, but was found damaged in the street, according to the Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati. The piece is made up of 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds. On October 25, two people were arrested in connection with the robbery. Almost a week later, five more suspects were detained. The case has also reignited debate about the challenges facing the Louvre, which is dealing with a growing number of visitors and reduced staff. The Louvre has a history of thefts and attempted robberies. The most famous was in 1911, when the Mona Lisa disappeared from its frame, stolen by Vincenzo Peruggia, a former employee who hid inside the museum and came out with the painting under his coat. The work was recovered two years later, in Florence — an episode that helped transform Leonardo da Vinci’s portrait into the best-known work of art in the world.
