Israel destroyed buildings and ordered the evacuation of residents from more than half of the Gaza Strip, where Israeli troops still remain. Almost the entire population of the territory, estimated at more than 2 million people, now lives in makeshift shelters or damaged buildings, in areas where Israel has retreated and Hamas has regained control.
