It is #FAKE that a photo shows Maduro with a thin and haggard face during a hearing in the USA; image was created with AI Reproduction Posts are circulating on social media with a photo that supposedly shows former Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro during the most recent United States court hearing, which took place on March 26. It’s #FAKE. Fake Seal (Horizontal) g1 🛑 What are the posts like? Published on X, Facebook and Instagram, the posts began circulating on March 27, one day after Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, underwent a new hearing in a court in New York, USA. The court stated that it will not dismiss drug trafficking charges against the dictator. See two captions that accompany the posts: “Nicolás Maduro returned to court in New York visibly thinner and haggard, amid serious accusations of drug trafficking and terrorism […]”; and “Maduro reappears with a drastic visual change after 80 days in prison in the USA. Images taken during court hearings show the president of Venezuela looking very different from his previous appearance, generating speculation about his state of health and the treatment he received in prison […]”. The image shown shows Maduro in handcuffs, wearing an orange t-shirt and pants, the uniform of the American prison system, and with a thin and haggard face. However, it was produced with artificial intelligence (AI) — read more below. American forces attacked Venezuela and captured Nicolás Maduro on January 3, 2026. Two days later, Maduro appeared in court in New York for his first hearing and declared himself innocent. ⚠️ Why is it #FAKE? Fact or Fake submitted the content to the synthetic image detector available on the InVID platform. Result: “The veraAI detector of the InVID-WeVerify plugin found strong evidence suggesting that this image is synthetic.” The analysis also indicated that there is a 87% chance that the material was created with this resource (see infographic at the end of this check). 90% is classified as “very solid evidence”. According to the international press, the Venezuelan appeared to be thinner at the time. However, Maduro’s clothing in the fake photo does not match the reports from international media outlets that followed the hearing: the British newspaper “The Guardian” stated that Maduro was wearing a “khaki prison uniform” with a neon t-shirt underneath; that he was wearing a beige prison uniform. Fato ou Fake did not find any photos or videos of the occasion. In the United States, the transmission or capture of images in federal court trials is prohibited. The only records allowed are “courtroom sketches”, drawings made during hearings that are released to the public.
