Argentina approves lowering the age of criminal responsibility from 16 to 14 years old

by Marcelo Moreira

The Argentine Chamber approved this Thursday (12) a bill that reduces the age of criminal responsibility from 16 to 14 years old.

The original text sent to deputies envisaged lowering the age of imputability to 13 years old, butsAccording to the Argentine press, the age was set at 14 to guarantee support in Congress. The text was approved by 149 votes in favor to 100 against.

The project goes to the Senate and, if approved, will be sanctioned by the candidate Javier Milei. The proposal provides that the maximum term for prison sentences will be 15 years and parole can only be granted after two-thirds of the sentence has been served.

Sentences may be served in house arrest, specialized centers or separate sections of prisons, in addition to other alternative measures such as community services or economic reparation.

The topic gained relevance after the death of Jeremías Monzón, aged 15, in the province of Santa Fé, in December 2025. According to investigations, the victim was lured to a location and was attacked by a group of teenagers who recorded the moment.

The boy’s body was found in a warehouse with more than 20 stab wounds. The case generated commotion in the country and was one of the main reasons for the government to accelerate the agenda.
