Israel took control of the border crossing in May 2024, about nine months after the war in Gaza began. The reopening was a key requirement in the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s plan to halt fighting between Israel and Hamas militants, which followed a ceasefire agreed in October. Israel had stated that it would only reopen the crossing after recovering the body of the last Israeli hostage in Gaza, which occurred this week.
