There is no external agent that governs Venezuela,” declared Rodríguez in a televised message. Rodríguez was Maduro’s vice president and first in the line of succession. The Supreme Court, controlled by the Chavistas, ordered her to take office for 90 days — a period that could be extended. She is the daughter of Jorge Antonio Rodríguez, founder of the Socialist League, a Marxist party, who died in 1976 while in police custody, and Delcy Gómez. She is the sister of Jorge Rodríguez Gómez, former vice president of Venezuela and former mayor of Caracas, one of the strongest names in the Chavista regime. Their father was a revolutionary leader tortured and killed by the Venezuelan government in the 1970s, supported by the US at the time. A lawyer specializing in labor law, she graduated from the Central University of Venezuela and claims to have completed postgraduate studies in Paris and London. She worked as a university professor and presided over an association of labor lawyers. In her personal life, she is not married, has no children and has had known relationships, including with the actor Fernando Carrillo, until 2007, and, more recently, with Yussef Abou Nassif Smaili, mentioned as her partner on official trips. His political career began in 2003, still during the government of Hugo Chávez, in technical positions linked to the Vice-Presidency and the Ministry of Energy and Mines. From then on, he accumulated roles of increasing importance within the core of Chavista power, both in domestic politics and diplomacy. A member of the national leadership of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Delcy Rodríguez also briefly led the Somos Venezuela movement, created in 2018 as a political and social arm of the government.
