US triples aid for immigrants who self-deport

by Marcelo Moreira

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced this Monday (22) that it will increase the aid to be paid to illegal immigrants who register for self-deportation through the CBP Home application by the end of the year from US$1,000 to US$3,000.

According to a statement from the ministry, in addition to this amount, registered immigrants will also receive a plane ticket to their countries of origin and will be exempt from fines or civil penalties for not having left the United States sooner.

“Illegal immigrants must take advantage of this gift and self-deport, because if they don’t, we will find them, arrest them, and they will never return,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in the statement.

CBP Home is one of the Donald Trump administration’s main strategies to deport illegal immigrants who are in the United States: according to the DHS, since January, when the Republican returned to the White House, around 1.9 million illegal immigrants have left voluntarily through the program.

In addition to immigrants who chose to self-deport, the Trump administration deported another 622,000 foreigners who were in the country irregularly, according to a report released by DHS on Friday (19).
