According to authorities, the young woman climbed a railing to reach the fountain and climbed onto the statue, built in the 16th century and carved in marble by the Italian artist Bartolomeo Ammannati. The work represents Neptune, the god of the seas in Greek mythology. To try to touch the statue’s penis, which is more than 4 meters high, the woman stepped on the edge of the fountain and on the legs of the horse sculptures that support the work, to avoid entering the water. She was approached by agents and removed from the scene. According to the city hall, an inspection found damage to the legs of the horse sculptures and to an ornament that the woman held on to so as not to slip. Authorities stated that, although small, the damage was “significant”. The tourist must respond to proceedings in the Italian courts. It wasn’t the first time. In September 2023, a tourist from Germany was also fined after breaking into the Neptune Fountain in Florence. According to authorities, the young man broke a piece of marble while climbing the centerpiece of the fountain. As he left, he also damaged the hoof of one of the horses in the sculpture.
