Ramagem leaves prison in the USA The United States ordered a Brazilian delegate involved in the arrest of former deputy Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ) to leave the country. The measure was released this Monday (20) by the American government’s Office for Western Hemisphere Affairs. ✅ Follow the g1 international news channel on WhatsApp Without mentioning names, the American government stated on a social network that a Brazilian authority tried to “circumvent formal extradition requests” to promote “political persecution” in the country. “No foreigner can manipulate our immigration system to circumvent formal extradition requests and extend political persecution to United States territory. Today, we ask that the Brazilian official in question leave the country for trying to do this”, says the text. TV Globo confirmed with the Brazilian Embassy in the United States that the authority cited is Federal Police delegate Marcelo Ivo de Carvalho, who worked with the United States Immigration and Customs Control Service (ICE). Carvalho was appointed to work in Miami in March 2023, on a two-year mission with ICE. Among its functions is the identification and arrest of fugitives from Brazilian justice in the USA. In March 2025, the government published an ordinance that extended his stay on the mission until August of this year. Itamaraty said it will not comment on the matter. The PF was not formally informed about the US government’s measure. Ramagem was detained by ICE on April 13 in Orlando, Florida. That day, the PF reported that he had been arrested for immigration reasons and taken to a detention center. The former deputy was released two days later. After leaving jail, Ramagem published a video thanking the top leadership of the Donald Trump government for his release. In the recording, he stated that his release was administrative, without any judicial procedure or bail payment being carried out. “I come to thank the North American government, from the highest leadership of the Trump administration,” said Ramagem in a post on social media. Members of ICE informed the PF that Ramagem will be able to wait in freedom, in the USA, for the analysis of an asylum request. g1 found that Brazilian authorities began preparing a report with information and documents to try to speed up his deportation to Brazil. Ramagem left Brazil in 2025 after being sentenced by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to 16 years in prison for an attempted coup d’état. He is accused of being part of the central core of the plot, which sought to keep former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in power. According to PF investigations published by g1, he left the country clandestinely before the end of the trial. Information indicates that he crossed the border between Roraima and Guyana and then headed to the United States. In January of this year, the Ministry of Justice informed the STF that the former deputy’s extradition request had been forwarded to the US government. The Brazilian Embassy in Washington sent the documentation to the State Department on December 30, 2025.
