Donnie Wahlberg really wanted Blue Bloods spinoff series Boston Blue to be able to film in Boston.
The 56-year-old actor claims he went as far as offering to give up a huge chunk of his paycheck to make it happen so he could work in his hometown. Unfortunately, it didn’t pan out and the show mostly films in Toronto due to costs.
“When I got offered the job, I’m like, ‘This is a dream come true.’ I thought, I’ll do a spinoff in L.A. or Vegas or Texas, somewhere hot,” he told Andy Cohen during an episode of SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, per Variety. “And they were like, ‘How about Boston?’ I was like, ‘Ahhhh.’ They hooked me. And I was like, ‘Alright, let’s do it in Boston.’”

But then producers clarified that they could not film in Boston because of how expensive it would be.
Donnie says he offered to give back 50% of his paycheck, but it wasn’t enough.
“And they said, ‘You can give back 100% and so can the rest of the cast, we cannot film this show in Boston.’ It’s so expensive. For the most part, we shoot in Toronto,” he shared.
There are additional reasons that make Boston a challenging place to film, namely because there are many things that can disrupt production such as crowds and tour groups.
