Ramagem is released in the United States Former federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ) left prison in the United States this Wednesday (15). Ramagem had been arrested on Monday (13), in Orlando, Florida, for immigration reasons, according to the Federal Police (PF). The same day, he was taken to a detention center in Orange County, Florida, where he was held in a separate cell. This Wednesday, his name was no longer on the center’s list of detainees or in the US Immigration Service (ICE) system. TV Globo learned from the local police that he was released at 2:52 pm local time (3:52 pm in Brasília). There are still no details about the release. The PF stated that it is awaiting further information. Ramagem left Brazil in 2025 after being sentenced by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to 16 years in prison for an attempted coup d’état. He is accused of being part of the central core of the plot, which sought to keep former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in power. The Federal Police reported that the former deputy was detained for immigration reasons. According to PF investigations published by g1, he left the country clandestinely before the end of the trial. Information indicates that he crossed the border between Roraima and Guyana and then headed to the United States. In January of this year, the Ministry of Justice informed the STF that the extradition request had been forwarded to the US government. The Brazilian Embassy in Washington sent the documentation to the State Department on December 30, 2025. Allies said that Ramagem intended to request political asylum in the United States. On the other hand, Minister Alexandre de Moraes ordered the inclusion of Ramagem’s name on the Interpol list, which allowed his arrest by foreign authorities. While abroad, he suffered administrative and political sanctions: on December 18, his mandate as federal deputy was revoked by the Chamber; the Chamber also canceled the diplomatic passport after the revocation; By order of the STF, parliamentary salaries were blocked.
