US announces three-phase transition plan for Venezuela

by Syndicated News

The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stated this Wednesday (8) that the The White House is working on a three-stage transition plan for Venezuela. According to him, the strategy foresees, as a first step, the stabilization of the country, followed by economic recovery and, finally, the transition to democracy.

Rubio spoke to the American press after a meeting with Democratic and Republican senators at the Capitol in Washington. The meeting was also attended by the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, and aimed to provide clarifications to Congress about the operation that resulted in the arrest of dictator Nicolás Maduro.

According to the head of American diplomacy, the authorization for the acquisition and sale of up to 50 million barrels of oil previously sanctioned is part of the initial stabilization phase of the plan. The plan, therefore, came into force on Tuesday (06), when the barrels were shipped.

According to the Secretary of State, the resources obtained from the sale of oil seized by the United States will be used for actions that directly benefit the Venezuelan population.

“We are already seeing progress with this new agreement that was announced, and other agreements will come,” declared Rubio, without detailing what these initiatives would be.

The recovery phase aims to ensure that American, Western and other companies have access to the Venezuelan market.

“At the same time, we want to begin a process of national reconciliation in Venezuela, so that opposition forces are amnestied, released from prison or can return to the country, in addition to beginning the reconstruction of civil society,” he said.

Rubio added that the steps can occur simultaneously at certain times. “We will have more details in the coming days, but we feel that we are moving forward in a very positive way,” he said.

In another press conference at the White House, Trump administration spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt stated that the United States is in direct contact with the interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, and that the provisional government’s decisions are being guided by Washington.
