Trump says Venezuela is now an ally

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said this Friday (9) that the Chavista regime in Venezuela has become an “ally” of the Americans after the capture of former dictator Nicolás Maduro and stated that he should soon meet with representatives of the Caribbean country.

According to information from CNN, the Republican made the comment during a meeting with representatives of American companies in the oil sector, with the aim of encouraging them to operate in Venezuela.

“Right now, they [o regime venezuelano] seem to be an ally. And I think they will continue to be an ally, and we don’t want Russia there. We don’t want China there,” Trump said.

When asked by journalists if he intended to meet with Venezuela’s interim dictator, Delcy Rodríguez, or other representatives of the Chavista regime, the American president said that a meeting could take place soon, without giving further details.

“I will probably meet soon with several representatives from Venezuela. We haven’t scheduled anything yet,” Trump said.

“But the relationship we have with the people who currently govern Venezuela is very good. We also have a young woman who received the Nobel Peace Prize. She will come to visit us and pay her respects to our country, especially to me”, said the Republican, in reference to opposition leader María Corina Machado, who is expected to visit Trump next week.

Regarding the activities of American oil companies in Venezuela, the president said he wants them to invest “at least US$100 billion of their own resources, and not those of the government”, to revitalize the sector’s infrastructure in the country, which has deteriorated in recent decades due to incompetence, corruption and the lack of investment by Chavismo.

However, company representatives expressed concern at the White House meeting: ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods told Trump that Venezuela is currently “unviable for investment”.
