US President Donald Trump reported on Sunday (12) that he is considering reestablishing the internet in Iran, which had been taken down since last week amid the protests, with the help of billionaire Elon Musk.
The White House leader anticipated that he would talk to the businessman, owner of SpaceX, which operates Starlink, to study this possibility. The Ayatollah regime imposed a blockade on Iranians’ access due to demonstrations to express discontent with the current management of the country.
The repressive measure aims to hinder communication between protesters and supporters of the protests who are located outside the country.
“We can get the internet up and running, if possible. […] We can talk to Elon. Because, as you know, he’s very good at this kind of thing. He has a very good company. So, we can talk to Elon Musk,” said the president, adding: “I’ll call him as soon as I finish talking to you.” It is not known at this time whether the two have already discussed the matter.
Starlink released free internet access in Venezuela shortly after the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro. The measure will be valid until February, according to a statement issued by Musk’s company itself.
In a January 3 post on X, Starlink stated that it “is providing free broadband service to the people of Venezuela until February 3, ensuring continued connectivity.”
Trump has stated on different occasions in recent days that he supports the protesters in Iran and suggested that the US may intervene to help them. The American commented that leaders of the ayatollah regime even called to negotiate with him after the statements.
