The Brazilian film “The Secret Agent” made history at this year’s Golden Globes by being the first to win two awards in the same edition. Kleber Mendonça Filho’s feature film won the categories of Best film in a non-English language and best actor in a drama film, for Wagner Moura’s performance, losing only the best drama film category to “Hamnet: Life before Hamlet”.
Moura was the first Brazilian actor to win this award, joining Fernanda Torres as the first Brazilians awarded for their performances at the awards. In his speech, Wagner especially thanked the film’s director and spoke about the message of “The Secret Agent”.
Set in the 1970s, the film tells the story of a university professor, who lived in São Paulo and decides to return to Recife and meet his youngest son, despite the risk he runs during the military dictatorship.
In 1999, when “Central do Brasil” was nominated in the categories of best film in a non-English language and best actress in a dramatic film with Fernanda Montenegro, it only won the first. Last year, “I’m Still Here” was nominated in two categories, but only won best actress in a dramatic film with Fernanda Torres.
The winners were announced in Los Angeles, in the United States, this Sunday (11) and the Golden Globes are among the biggest awards in world cinema. After celebrating the victories of “The Secret Agent”, the attention of the Hollywood film industry turns to the most important event of the season: the 2026 Oscars. The final ceremony of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is scheduled for March 15.
