The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union (EU) and Cooperation of Spain, José Manuel Albares, defended this Thursday (8) that the bloc remove sanctions on the interim dictator of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez.
“We have an unwritten rule that we usually follow, which is to never impose sanctions on the president of a country to keep dialogue open,” Albares claimed, in an interview with the broadcaster La Sexta.
“We will have to consider this situation, and this ban may be lifted. During our presidency [do bloco]in 2023, Delcy represented Venezuela at the summit [UE-Celac] and not only entered the EU, but also entered the Council building [Europeu]”, stated the minister managing the president of the Spanish government, the socialist Pedro Sánchez.
Rodríguez is the target of economic sanctions and has been banned from entering the EU and the United States since 2018, due to his role in the repression of the Nicolás Maduro regime, captured in an American military operation on Saturday (3).
“[As sanções] they are a means to an end, not an end in themselves. We want them to be suspended, because that would mean that the cause that generated them has disappeared. If the new Venezuelan government takes steps in the direction we want, they must be suspended. Spain will always be at the side of our brotherly peoples in Latin America,” said Albares.
