The Regional Court of the 6th Region, based in Belo Horizonte, suspended the injunction of the Federal Court of Minas Gerais that had determined the withdrawal of lifetime benefits from former president Jair Bolsonaro.
Judge Mônica Sifuentes determined that the former president’s right to civil servants, official vehicles, drivers and advisors should be maintained. All presidents of the republic have lifetime benefits of security and personal support services, in addition to two cars at their disposal with their respective drivers.
The request to suspend rights came from Belo Horizonte councilor Pedro Rousseff (PT), who argued that because he was in prison, Bolsonaro would not be using the resources while they continued to add up expenses.
In the decision, the judge argued that “the abrupt and complete suppression of the entire personal support apparatus leaves Bolsonaro, an elderly person with a history of health problems, in a situation of marked vulnerability”.
Despite this, Sifuentes chose to suspend the driver service and the two cars made available to Bolsonaro, as he cannot use them and the resources would be wasted.
