A qualified majority of member countries of the European Union (EU) approved this Friday (9), on a provisional basis, the signing of the trade agreement with Mercosur, after more than 25 years of negotiations. The information was confirmed by diplomats to the Reuters and France Prese (AFP) news agencies.
Member countries gained enough support to move forward with the measure, which paves the way for the creation of the world’s largest free trade zone, at a meeting with ambassadors in Brussels.
With the initial approval of a qualified majority – despite the rejection of some members such as France and Poland – the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will be able to travel to Paraguay, the country that holds the rotating presidency of Mercosur, next Monday (12) to officially sign the trade agreement.
