The Mi-34M1 multifunction light helicopter has begun flight tests equipped with the Russian VK-650V engine, marking a new stage in the program led by the Russian Helicopters holding, a subsidiary of the public corporation Rostec.

According to officially published information, the first flight of the prototype lasted about ten minutes and was carried out by test pilot Sergey Barkov of the Mil and Kamov National Helicopter Center. During the activity, the stability and maneuverability of the aircraft were assessed, as well as the loads on the main systems when flying horizontally and performing turns.

The Mi-34M1 was designed for passenger transport, surveillance, flight training and air sport missions. It is a light, single-engine, multifunction helicopter, intended to occupy a segment hitherto mainly served by foreign models.

The device uses the VK-650V turboshaft engine, developed by United Engine Corporation through the Klimov concern. According to program officials, the engine operated normally during the initial flight, demonstrating full compatibility with the helicopter’s onboard systems. The VK-650V is presented as the first Russian engine intended for light helicopters with a maximum takeoff mass of up to four tons.

In addition to the new propulsion system, the Mi-34M1 received domestically produced avionics and onboard systems. The objective is to reduce dependence on imported components and to offer a domestic alternative in a market where the operation of foreign helicopters has become more expensive, particularly in terms of maintenance.

In a statement to the press, Rostec Director General Sergey Chemezov indicated that the launch of the tests represents a significant step forward for the Russian aviation industry, emphasizing the maneuverability, ease of piloting and maintenance of the new model. According to him, the next phase of the program includes certification testing and preparation for mass production.

The Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation also called the start of flight tests an important event for the national aviation complex, emphasizing that the project demonstrates the ability of the national industry to develop modern aircraft based on clean technologies.

With the advancement of the Mi-34M1 program, the industry expects the helicopter to complement the current range of Russian rotary-wing aircraft, expanding the options available to civilian and training operators.
