Man charged with attempted murder after car bomb attack in Northern Ireland

Police in Northern Ireland said on Friday that a 66-year-old man had been charged with a number of crimes, including attempted murder, following an attack on Dunmurry police station in south Belfast at the weekend. The man was arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Law on Tuesday and was also charged with possession of explosives, provoking an explosion, possession of articles for use in terrorism and kidnapping under coercion of a person, police said. He is scheduled to appear in court on Saturday. A car bomb exploded outside a police station in the Dunmurry area late Saturday night after a delivery vehicle was hijacked and the driver forced to drive it to the scene, Northern Ireland police said on Sunday. The Irish News newspaper cited the New IRA as claiming responsibility for the attack on Tuesday. The New IRA is one of several active militant groups opposing the 1998 peace agreement and is behind attacks on police, including a similar attempted car bombing of a police station on the outskirts of Belfast last month.
