Video shows use of children as shields in Colombia; president criticizes Videos circulating on social media show children being placed at the front line of a protest in Bogotá, Colombia, during a confrontation with security forces. The scenes took place last Wednesday (29). The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, reacted to the images, released by the director of the Colombian Institute of Family Wellbeing (ICBF), Astrid Cáceres, this Thursday (30). “I don’t admit that. Children come first in society”, wrote Petro in a post on the social network The images were recorded during protests in front of the Ministry of the Interior, in Bogotá, this Wednesday (29), according to the vehicle. In the videos, it is possible to see minors in the middle of the cordon of protesters while, in the background, police operations are taking place using stun bombs and tear gas. According to authorities, the operation ended with no serious injuries reported. Video shows children being placed on the front line of a demonstration in Colombia Reproduction/X Bogotá’s Government Secretary, Gustavo Quintero, stated that children would have been used as “protection shields” during the clashes. The clashes occurred after Emberá indigenous people entered Ministry of the Interior buildings and blocked access to the site. According to Colombian authorities, more than 1,200 employees were trapped for around seven hours inside the buildings. The Emberá community participates in mobilizations in Bogotá to demand better living conditions, security and compliance with agreements related to territorial rights, resettlement and humanitarian assistance from the government, according to local media outlets.
