Banksy installs statue of man holding flag in central London REUTERS/Jack Taylor Banksy confirmed on Thursday (30) that he is behind a large statue depicting a man carrying a flag that has been flown in his face, installed on a plinth near the Mall in the ceremonial heart of London. The sculpture, which features Banksy’s signature on the pedestal, was lifted into place by a flatbed truck overnight, according to a video posted on the street artist’s Instagram. The suited figure, whose view is obscured by the flag, has one foot suspended from the edge of the pedestal, indicating that he is about to descend. The work was installed in an area of the British capital that is home to royal palaces and gentlemen’s clubs, and mirrors the style of nearby statues, including those of King Edward VII on horseback, nurse Florence Nightingale and statesman Sidney Herbert. Comments on Banksy’s Instagram speculated that the work was about “blind patriotism” and questioned how he managed to achieve such a feat in the epicenter of the British establishment. Banksy, who keeps his identity a complete secret, uses Instagram to confirm that murals and sculptures are his work.
