Reproduction/trumpcard.gov Only one application has been approved so far for the “Gold Card” visa program launched by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Thursday (23). In September, the president signed a decree to create the program that offers residence in the United States in exchange for the payment of one million dollars (R$4.95 million, at the current exchange rate). Orders began to be received in December. American authorities recently approved one person’s request, Lutnick said before a House of Representatives committee. “And there are hundreds in line” going through the process, he added. Applicants must also pay a processing fee of $15,000 (R$74,000) to the Department of Homeland Security, and Lutnick stressed that requests are subject to “extremely rigorous investigations and analysis.” The program established a fee of one million dollars for individuals and two million (R$9.9 million) for sponsorships by companies. Its creation coincided with Trump’s determination to add an annual fee of 100 thousand dollars (R$495 thousand) to H-1B visas for specialized workers. The president initially said that the new visa would attract people capable of generating employment and that it could be used to reduce the national deficit. Since returning to the presidency in 2025, Trump has tightened immigration policy and his government has carried out deportation operations. SEE ALSO Trump cancels sending delegation to Pakistan
