CIA published video in Chinese to recruit spies CIA/Reproduction The CIA intensified its effort to recruit spies in China with a new video in Chinese released this Thursday (12). The content appeals to disgruntled military officers and is expected to further anger Beijing. In the video, published on the agency’s YouTube channel, a fictional Chinese official decides to contact American intelligence after concluding that “leaders only protect their own interests” and that “their power is based on countless lies.” The clip shows the character at home with his family. He then drives in heavy rain, passes a checkpoint, takes out a laptop in the car, and types away while stating, “Choosing this path is my way of fighting for my family and my country.” The Chinese text accompanying the video calls for leaks about Beijing’s leaders and army, as well as other areas. “Do you have information about senior Chinese leaders? Are you a military officer or have ties to the Army? Do you work in the areas of intelligence, diplomacy, economics, science or advanced technology, or do you deal with people who work in these fields?” “Please contact us. We want to understand the truth,” says the text, which claims it is possible to speak to the CIA “securely through our hidden service on Tor”, a darknet browser. Last year, the agency released other videos with the same objective. According to director John Ratcliffe, the material sought to recruit Chinese employees. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the publications and classified the initiative as a “blatant political provocation”.
