Jorge Seif is acquitted and has a request to revoke his mandate unanimously rejected by the TSE

by Marcelo Moreira

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) unanimously acquitted Santa Catarina senator Jorge Seif (PL) in the process that requested the revocation of his mandate for alleged abuse of economic power in the 2022 elections. The trial concluded this Thursday morning (12), in Brasília, with a score of 7 votes to 0 for maintaining the mandate.

The analysis of the case began on Tuesday (10) and was completed with the vote of the President of the Court, Minister Cármen Lúcia. In general terms, the ministers understood that the complaint did not present robust evidence nor demonstrated the gravity necessary to create an imbalance in the election. For the collegiate, the conduct attributed to Seif was not enough to justify the loss of his mandate.

What the complaint said

The request for revocation was presented by the Bora Trabalho coalition, formed by PSD, União Brasil and Patriota. The group launched former governor Raimundo Colombo (PSD) as a candidate for the Senate in 2022, who came in second place in the dispute for the only seat at stake in Santa Catarina.

The action highlighted alleged abuse of economic power by Seif during the campaign. Among the allegations were the use of a helicopter belonging to a businessman in the construction sector and the use of aircraft and structures from the Havan store chain, owned by businessman Luciano Hang, to boost the candidacy.

With the TSE’s unanimous decision, Jorge Seif remains in office until the end of his term.
