Trump signs decree to increase beef imports from Argentina Reproduction The President of the United States, Donald Trump, signed on Friday (6) a decree to increase beef imports from Argentina, the White House reported. According to a statement, in 2026, 80 thousand more tons of the product will be purchased. The decision applies to boneless meat, aimed at the production of sausages, the largest type imported by the country. Purchases will be made in four stages of 20 thousand tons, with the first batch starting on February 13th. The last load should be completed on December 31st of this year. At the time, Trump said he would use the measure to reduce beef prices in the US, which have reached record levels. Producers saw the comment as a threat as they profit from sky-high cattle prices and strong demand from American consumers. The cow herd has been steadily declining since 2019 as drought in western states affected pastures and increased feed costs, forcing ranchers to send more animals to slaughter. What’s more, supplies have become even tighter as the U.S. has since May suspended most imports of Mexican cattle amid concerns about the northward spread of the New World screwworm, a flesh-eating pest that infests cattle. High food prices contributed to dropping US consumer confidence in January to the lowest level in more than 11 and a half years, putting pressure on Republican President Donald Trump. Due to the drop in production, Brazil surpassed the USA as the world’s main meat producer in 2025. It was the first time that Brazil occupied this position in USDA statistics.
