The expert report released this Friday (06) by the minister Alexandre de Moares brings the analysis of Official Medical Board of the Federal Police which concluded that the former president Jair Messias Bolsonaro has clinical conditions to continue serving at Papudinha, in Complexo da Papuda, in Brasília.
Although the document attests that the health of the former president demands continuous care and monitoringthe experts denied the need for transfer for one penitentiary hospital or house arrest.
The expertise was requested by the defense after an episode of falling and reports of physical weakness. The 53-page report details a series of chronic illnesses, but classifies the overall picture as “stable”.
Care yes, hospital no
The main conclusion of federal criminal experts is that, despite age and multiple illnesses, the current prison environment is compatible with treatment, as long as adjustments are made.
In the document, doctors categorically state:
“The general clinical condition of the expert is stable, with no need for urgent referral at the moment. On the other hand, the presence of chronic comorbidities that require control and monitoring is undeniable.”
The defense alleged serious conditions such as pneumonia, anemia and depression to justify leaving the unit. However, the report did not prove the existence of these three specific conditions after the exams.
List of confirmed diseases
Direct clinical examination and analysis of medical documents confirmed that Bolsonaro has seven main conditions that require “therapeutic optimization”:
- Systemic arterial hypertension;
- Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS);
- Clinical obesity;
- Systemic atherosclerosis;
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease;
- Actinic keratosis (skin lesions);
Intra-abdominal adhesions (resulting from multiple surgeries)
Regarding the seriousness of the case, the report highlights: “Such comorbidities do not, at the moment, give rise to the need for transfer to hospital care.”
Risk of falls and medication “cocktail”
A warning point raised by the expert concerns the medication used by the former president, especially for the treatment of incoercible hiccups (use of Chlorpromazine and Gabapentin).
The report points out that the interaction between the different medications (polypharmacy) may be causing excessive sedation and dizziness, which would explain the recent fall episode.
“The concomitant use, especially of medications that act on the central nervous and cardiovascular systems, therefore creates a risky pharmacological scenario, in which possible adverse effects – sedation, lethargy, dizziness – […] – are related to the risk of falling”*, says an excerpt from the analysis.
Adaptations in “Papudinha”
For Bolsonaro to remain in the military unit safely, the Federal Police stipulated a series of structural and routine requirements. The place, which has 38.5 m² inside and has a bedroom-living room, pantry and bathroom, will need adjustments to avoid new accidents.
Among the mandatory recommendations listed in the report are:
- Installation of support railings in corridors and bathroom stalls;
- Additional panic/emergency bells for real-time monitoring;
- Continuous monitoring in common areas;
- Fractional diet and strict nutritional monitoring;
- Continuous physiotherapy to gain muscle strength and balance.
The document ends by confirming that, with these palliative measures and due multidisciplinary monitoring, criminal execution can continue in the current location.
