On the day of the crime, Routh was spotted by a Secret Service agent hiding behind bushes at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The agent shot at him, but Routh managed to escape without firing a shot. About 45 minutes later, he was arrested by police while driving.
