US Embassy recommends avoiding favelas during Carnival

by Marcelo Moreira

The United States Embassy in Brazil released this week a series of recommendations for American citizens for Carnival, which will take place between February 13th and 18th.

In a statement published on Tuesday (27), the diplomatic representation stated that, “although the most famous events take place in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Recife, you can expect large gatherings and parades, also known as ‘blocos’, throughout Brazil”.

“Ahead of the festivities, US citizens are reminded to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings,” stated the embassy, which listed a series of actions to be taken during Carnival, such as avoiding walking alone, especially at night, and making “contingency” plans in case a person becomes separated from friends or family during the festivities.

“Do not wear expensive jewelry or carry large amounts of cash. Opportunistic crimes, including cell phone theft, are common during Carnival,” the diplomatic representation added.

The note also recommended keeping vehicle windows closed during journeys to and from carnival events and parking in well-lit areas, avoiding leaving valuables inside the car.

“Avoid favelas (communities) at all times, even during parties and street blocks. Do not accept drinks from strangers and do not leave drinks unattended. Do not physically resist any robbery attempt, as criminals are often armed,” the embassy said.

The statement pointed out that any criminal activity must first be reported to the local police by calling 190 and listed contacts for American citizens to speak to the embassy and consulates in Brazil in case of any need.
