Send to g1 According to the American government, tariffs could affect products imported from countries that, directly or indirectly, supply Cuba with oil, based on national security and foreign policy assessments. The order cites accusations that the Cuban government maintains links with countries and groups considered hostile to the US, such as Russia, China and Iran, in addition to the Hamas and Hezbollah groups, classified as terrorists by Washington. The text also mentions human rights violations and actions that, according to the American government, destabilize the region. “The United States has zero tolerance for the atrocities of the Cuban communist regime and will act to protect foreign policy, national security, and national interests,” the order says. The Commerce Department will be responsible for identifying countries that supply oil to Cuba, while the State Department will decide whether and at what level tariffs will be applied. The measure comes into force this Thursday (30). The text also provides that the US government may tighten its actions if affected countries react or adopt retaliation. Trump has been toughening his speech against Cuba since the beginning of the year, when the United States carried out an operation to capture the deposed dictator Nicolás Maduro, in Venezuela. On January 23, the North American website Politico revealed that the president was studying a naval blockade against Cuba to prevent oil imports from arriving in the country. The objective would be to press for a change of regime. A similar strategy was adopted against Venezuela in December, when American forces began to prevent the transit of oil tankers targeted by United States sanctions. Three officials interviewed by Politico said that the measure is supported by members of the government, including the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. The son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio is one of the main critics of the Cuban regime within the Trump administration. On Tuesday (27), Trump stated that the Cuban regime will “fall very soon”, claiming that Venezuela — which was once the island’s main supplier — stopped sending oil and financial resources to Cuba.
