The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said this Monday (26) in a post on the social network Truth Social that the Venezuelan regime, now under the command of Delcy Rodríguez, has been releasing political prisoners “at an accelerated pace”.
He also thanked the new commanders of the Chavista regime for what he called an “important humanitarian gesture”. The statement comes on the same day that authorities in Caracas said that 808 people had been released in recent months.
Trump also wrote that he expects the pace of releases to “increase in the coming weeks.”
Earlier, Venezuela’s Minister of the Interior and Justice, Diosdado Cabello, also known for being considered Chavismo’s number 2, declared that the country had released 808 prisoners since “before December”. Human rights groups and non-governmental organizations have questioned the regime’s figures and the scope of releases.
According to human rights organizations that monitor political prisoners, the number of people actually released by the regime so far represents a fraction of the total considered detained for political reasons, with in many cases only a few dozen releases following official announcements.
