The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, said this Sunday (18) that an invasion of Greenland by the United States “would make Putin the happiest man in the world.”
Sánchez said any US military action against Denmark’s Arctic island would weaken NATO, the Western military alliance, and legitimize Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“If we focus on Greenland, I must say that an American invasion of that territory would make Vladimir Putin the happiest man in the world. Why? Because it would legitimize his attempt to invade Ukraine,” he told La Vanguardia newspaper.
“If the United States used force, it would be the end of NATO. Putin would be doubly happy,” added Sánchez.
US tariffs for countries opposed to Greenland takeover begin February 1
On Saturday (17), President Donald Trump changed his strategy towards Greenland, announcing tariffs on European allies until the US is able to buy the island.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump reported that 10% tariffs will begin on February 1st. The tax will apply to products from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and the United Kingdom, all of which are already subject to American taxes.
Rates will rise to 25% on June 1 and will remain until the U.S. finalizes its purchase of the island, the president wrote. Trump has emphasized that he will accept nothing less than ownership of the autonomous island.
