Trump says Denmark failed to fend off ‘Russian threat’ from Greenland and says ‘time has come’

The US already has a military base on the island, but has drastically reduced its presence on the territory. Faced with recent threats from Trump, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden sent military troops to Greenland last Thursday (15). Trump announced this Saturday (17) that he will apply a 10% tariff to eight European countries, starting February 1, 2026, if they oppose US plans. “From February 1, 2026, all countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Finland) will be subject to a 10% tariff on all goods sent to the United States of America. On June 1, 2026, the tariff will be increased to 25%”, informed the president on Truth Social. He further stated that the tariff will be due and required until an agreement is reached for the complete and total purchase of Greenland.
