Elections in Portugal: Seguro and Ventura will face each other in the second round of the presidential election

For the first time in 40 years, Portugal will have a second round of presidential elections. António José Seguro and André Ventura will face each other in a new election, scheduled for February 8th.

The winner will take office at the end of the term of the current president, Marcelo Rebelo, on March 9, 2026.

Seguro, aged 63, is ex-leader of the Socialist Party and has already held the seat of Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and Portuguese Republic. As for Ventura, is the founder of the “Chega” party and a former sports commentator and gained prominence for having speeches focused on combating corruption and immigration.

The elections in Portugal took place this Sunday (18), with 11 candidates running for the presidential election. The polls closed at 7pm local time (4pm Brasília time).

The drop in the number of abstentions was one of the highlights in the period and was between 35 and 40%, the lowest mark in the last 20 years. In the country, voting is not mandatory.
