The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, announced this Thursday (15) the sending of French troops and military equipment to Greenland, in response to statements by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who once again defended the annexation of the Arctic territory currently under Danish sovereignty.
According to Macron, a team of French military personnel has already been deployed to Greenland and should be reinforced in the coming days. The announcement was made by Macron during a speech to the Armed Forces at the Istres air base, in southern France.
According to French authorities cited by the international press, the deployment of forces takes place within the scope of the ongoing joint military operation in Greenland that also involves Germany, Sweden and Norway, in coordination with the Danish government. The ongoing operation includes military exercises and reinforced surveillance in the Arctic.
The French decision was announced the day after a meeting in Washington between representatives from the United States, Denmark and Greenland ended without agreement on the future of the territory. According to the Danish government, fundamental differences persist with the American position, despite the creation of a working group to discuss the issue.
