“Prison can lead to denunciation”, says lawyer about Maduro

by Syndicated News

The arrest of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro by United States special forces has become a divisive event in the continent’s geopolitics. Surgical and strategic operation, without leaving American casualties, rescued the Monroe Doctrine, summarized in the phrase “America for Americans”, which led American policy in the 19th century. The American action made it clear that, also in this century, President Donald Trump will not tolerate influences in the region other than that of the USA. This was the starting point of the Last Analysis program this Monday (05).

Former prosecutor Deltan Dallagnol explained that, contrary to popular belief, the American intervention was simply compliance with a court order. “Trump executed an arrest warrant against a criminal, a fugitive from the law in the United States, committing crimes such as drug trafficking. The Americans went to execute an arrest warrant.”

The reaction of the international community was predictable and, while the powers China and Russia criticized the measure at the United Nations (UN), here in Brazil, President Lula made a statement in the X: “These acts represent a very serious affront to Venezuela’s sovereignty and yet another extremely dangerous precedent for the entire international community.”

Councilman Guilherme Kilter rejected the “sovereignty” argument, which would supposedly delegitimize American intervention in Venezuela. According to him, “the people must determine who their leader is. And the Venezuelans, in more than three elections, demonstrated that they did not want Maduro as president. Even so, he remained there. Sovereignty became that of a dictator, and not that of a people.”

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, appeared, this Monday (5), in New York Court, where they were formally accused by the American courts. Both pleaded not guilty to crimes linked to narco-terrorism, international drug trafficking and the use of heavy weapons.

“Alive, Maduro can speak. With this shock of reality in prison, perhaps, he can even think about a plea bargain, to live in a place with better conditions. He is used to luxury, it’s worth remembering”, joked lawyer Fabiana Barroso.

Maduro’s arrest: winners and losers

If the mainstream media and the international community condemned the American intervention, the Venezuelan people gained a breather, within the civilizational chaos that Venezuela has become. The global left now loses one of its most emblematic figures and the right collects another victory on the continent.

“The Venezuelan people are the ones who win, because a ‘narco-dictator’ has left power. They also gain regional stability, as Maduro sponsored drug trafficking and fueled disorderly migratory flows. And Trump is also gaining popularity”, summarizes Dallagnol.

The program Latest Analysis is part of Gazeta do Povo’s live journalistic content, on YouTube. Showing times are 7pm to 8:30pm, Monday to Friday. The proposal is to discuss in a rational, in-depth and respectful way some of the challenging topics for the country’s direction.
