The Environment Agency has received two Mercedes-Benz Unimog vehicles to strengthen its national incident response fleet, with a particular focus on emergency operations related to floods and large-scale environmental events.
The Unimogs will be used to quickly transport excavators, pumps, generators, fuel cells and other critical equipment to critical locations across the country. Due to their high off-road capabilities and ability to cross flooded areas, the vehicles can reach difficult terrain and isolated regions where conventional trucks cannot operate.
The vehicles have been specially configured to meet the requirements of emergency response missions. Among the main adaptations is compliance with ADR standards, which allows the safe transport of high-capacity fuel cells necessary for the continuous operation of pumps and generators during prolonged incidents. The high ground clearance, portal axles and advanced all-wheel drive system ensure superior mobility on extreme terrain, while the high towing capacity enables the movement of heavy equipment.
The acquisition followed a tender process for a commercial off-road vehicle capable of operating both off-road and on public roads under a commercial operator’s licence. According to the agency, the Unimog was the only platform that fully met these requirements, combining extreme performance with regulatory compliance.
Sales, technical support and specialist delivery training were provided by South Cave Tractors Ltd, authorized dealer and coachbuilder for the Unimog range.
Ross Paterson, Head of Special Trucks at Daimler Truck UK, said the integration of the two Unimogers will significantly expand the Environment Agency’s ability to respond quickly to incidents at locations requiring specialist equipment, highlighting the quality of support and training provided.

According to her, the fact that the vehicles are already in operation confirms that the proven off-road capability of the Unimog can be combined with compliance with the strict safety standards applicable to commercial vehicles.
