Kevin Feige is opening about Robert Downey Jr re-joining the MCU in a different role.
The 61-year-old actor, of course, first starred as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but now, he’ll be playing villain Doctor Victor Von Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
While attending 2026 CinemaCon last week, Kevin explained why the actor was recast as a villain in the next Avengers film, which is part of Phase Six.

“He is ingrained in the fabric of the MCU for obvious reasons, and we would talk about when and how and if there could be a return,” Kevin told Entertainment Weekly.
The idea for Robert to play Doctor Doom came about three and a half years ago.
“At the time, [Downey] was on his way to winning the Academy Award for Oppenheimer and there was every story about ‘the greatest actor in the world,’ and we thought, ‘This could be it. Let’s do it,’” Kevin added. “It’s our universe. It’s a multiverse. We can do whatever the heck we want. He played the most iconic hero. Let’s have him play the most iconic villain.”
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18th, and another actor just confirmed they are reprising their MCU role!
