The fire started around 1:30 am local time (8:30 pm on Wednesday, Brasília time), inside the Le Constellation bar. The property is located within the ski resort of Crans-Montana, known as a luxury destination. Images show the fire spreading quickly through the bar’s ceiling. Upon noticing the flames, customers began to leave the place. The causes of the fire are still being investigated. Two French tourists at the bar told BFM TV that they saw the fire start after a waitress lit birthday candles too close to the wooden ceiling. “The fire spread through the ceiling very quickly,” said one of the tourists. The two reported that they managed to climb a narrow staircase to the ground floor, amid panic, and escape the building. Minutes later, according to them, the fire had already reached the ground floor. Officially, the local government speaks of “around 40 deaths” in the fire. Earlier, police had reported that “dozens of people may have died”. Most of the injured were hospitalized in serious condition, authorities said. The speed of the flames made it impossible for many people to leave the area in time. Swiss President Guy Parmelin said the case was “one of the worst tragedies our country has ever known.” Speaking to TV Globo, the Brazilian Consulate in Geneva stated that it had not yet been notified about Brazilians among the victims, but said that diplomats were checking the information with authorities in Crans-Montana.
