Russia expresses support for China in possible conflict with Taiwan

by Marcelo Moreira

Russia renewed its support for China this Sunday (28) in the event of a conflict with Taiwan. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov declared that Moscow recognizes Beijing’s territorial integrity and will defend it in the event of a conflict related to the decades-old self-ruled island.

“In connection with a possible escalation of tensions in the Taiwan Strait, the procedure for dealing with such situations is outlined in the Treaty of Good Neighborhood, Friendship and Cooperation with China of July 16, 2001 (…), in which one of the fundamental principles enshrined in this document is mutual support in protecting national unity and territorial integrity,” the Russian Foreign Minister said in an interview with the state agency Tass.

Lavrov reiterated that the regime of Vladimir Putin, an ally of Chinese dictator Xi Jinping, opposes Taiwan’s independence and considers it part of China. At the same time, he accused the West of fomenting tensions in the region for its own benefit.

“Today, Taiwan is being used as a military-strategic tool of containment against China. There is also a commercial interest: some in the West are not opposed to profiting from Taiwanese money and technology,” he said, in a message that was understood to be directed at the United States.

He also accused the United States of arming Taiwan. “Expensive American weapons are sold to Taiwan at market prices,” Lavrov declared.

On the 26th, Beijing announced sanctions against 20 American defense companies and ten of their top executives for “participation in arms sales to Taiwan in recent years.”

Through a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Xi’s regime confirmed the sanctions, with immediate effect, against American companies such as Boeing, Northrop Grumman Systems, L3Harris and VSE.

The Asian giant also accused Donald Trump’s government of positioning the world in a scenario increasingly close to a “situation of war”, especially after the American president sanctioned the National Defense Authorization Act for 2026, which includes an increase in arms sales to Taiwan.
