Brazil accused the United States, this Tuesday (23), of violating the United Nations Charter by mobilizing military forces in the Caribbean and imposing a blockade on Venezuelan oil tankers. The demonstration was made by Brazilian ambassador Sérgio Danese during a Security Council meeting, and placed the government in a critical position regarding the military escalation in the region.
According to him, the actions of the United States contradict basic principles of international law and need to be stopped immediately.
“The military force gathered and maintained by the United States in the vicinity of Venezuela and the recently announced naval blockade constitute violations of the Charter of the United Nations. Therefore, they must cease immediately and unconditionally in favor of the use of widely available political and legal instruments”, declared the ambassador.

Danese stated that Brazil maintains a historic commitment to defending the UN Charter, multilateralism and the peaceful resolution of international conflicts. For the Brazilian government, the use of military force aggravates tensions and removes any possibility of diplomatic understanding.
The Brazilian representative highlighted that the country wants Latin America and the Caribbean to remain a region of peace, without external armed interventions. According to Danese, solutions that are “based on force” are totally “contrary to the best traditions and the firm, universal and irreversible commitment to peace assumed by Latin America and the Caribbean”.
During the speech, Brazil also made a direct appeal for dialogue between Washington and Caracas as the only legitimate way out of the impasse. The ambassador stated that military confrontation does not bring stability and only increases the risk of larger conflicts.
“Brazil invites both countries to a genuine dialogue, conducted in good faith and without coercion,” Danese told the Security Council. He added that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) “will be prepared to collaborate, if necessary and with the mutual consent of the United States and Venezuela.”
On the American side, the stance was one of hardening during the Security Council meeting. The representative of the United States, Mike Waltz, stated that Venezuelan oil was being used to support activities linked to drug trafficking.
“The United States will do everything in its power to protect our hemisphere, our borders and the American people,” he declared.
A week ago, United States President Donald Trump announced a total blockade of sanctioned oil tankers arriving in or departing Venezuela.
Before the announcement, on December 10, Washington had seized the oil tanker Skipper. On Saturday (20), the US Coast Guard intercepted the oil tanker Centuries, also in international waters near the coast of Venezuela.
According to information from international agencies, the Coast Guard is also searching for the oil tanker Bella 1, which was sailing towards Venezuela to load oil.
