Trump’s lawyer suggests measures if Lula vetoes dosimetry

by Marcelo Moreira

Lawyer Martin De Luca, who represents United States President Donald Trump, suggested that measures could be taken against Brazil if President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva vetoes the dosimetry law.

The proposal, which foresees reviewing the penalties imposed on those convicted of the acts of January 8, 2023 and for accusations of attempted coup d’état after the 2022 elections, could benefit former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and was approved in the Senate last week. The next day, Lula said he would veto the project.

“Will Lula veto the bill to reduce penalties for the Disney scam? We already have the popcorn ready, Undersecretary of State,” wrote De Luca in X.

The lawyer ironically calls the acts of January 8, 2023 a “Disney coup” because he considers the accusations unfounded and because on the aforementioned date Bolsonaro was in Orlando, Florida, where the entertainment giant has theme parks.

In the publication, De Luca marked the United States Undersecretary of State, Christopher Landau, who had praised the approval of the project in the Chamber shortly before the Trump administration removed the names of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) minister Alexandre de Moraes, the Lex Institute of Legal Studies and Viviane Barci de Moraes, the judge’s wife and director of the institute, from its list of targets for economic sanctions via the Magnitsky Law.

The Treasury Department cited the approval of the dosimetry PL in the Chamber as one of the justifications for the withdrawal.

Before that, in November, Trump removed 50% tariffs on meat, coffee and other agricultural products from Brazil, to reduce prices in the United States.

However, the vice-president and minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, said that 22% of Brazilian exports to the North American country are still subject to tariffs, which had the STF case against Bolsonaro as one of the justifications.
