Italian police arrest 384 people and seize 1.4 tons of drugs A major operation by the Italian police against drug trafficking and crimes associated with the so-called “disreputable nightlife” resulted in the arrest of 384 people and the seizure of around 1.4 tons of drugs in several provinces of the country. The action was completed this Friday (19) and announced by the country’s police this Saturday (20). The operation takes place in a context of tightening Italian legislation. In June, the country approved a security decree that prohibits so-called “legal” cannabis and criminalizes the trade of so-called “cannabis light”, or hemp — a substance that does not have psychoactive effects, but which has become the target of greater inspection by the authorities. Of the total number of prisoners, 166 are foreigners and 6 minors were apprehended. In addition to the arrests, police reported that 655 people were placed under investigation, including 256 foreigners and 39 minors. During the operation, more than 95 thousand people were identified in raids carried out with the support of crime prevention units. Among the drugs seized were 1,370 kilos of cannabinoids, 35 kilos of cocaine and 1 kilo of heroin, as well as cannabis-based products that, according to initial analyses, were considered illicit. The police also seized 41 firearms, 80 bladed weapons and more than 300 thousand euros in cash, which, according to the authorities, came from drug trafficking. Italian police arrest 384 people and seize 1.4 tons of drugs Reproduction The operation also included 312 inspections of cannabis stores across the country. As a result, five establishments were temporarily closed in three cities, three people were arrested and 141 store owners or managers were charged. In these specific actions, 296 kilos of cannabinoids were seized. In addition, agents applied 565 administrative fines, mainly for drug use and illegal consumption of alcoholic beverages. Investigators also identified profiles on social networks whose content was linked to criminal activities and which could be taken to court for possible blocking.
